Scott Beyer is a travel writer now crossing the nation to continue work on a book about how to revive major U.S. cities. He is originally from Charlottesville, VA, but after high school moved to New York City for several years, before strapping on a backpack and exploring cities across the country. After that he began four years of independent research on the book, and began writing it midway through 2012. He is now completing a new chapter roughly each month, and expects to have the book finished by 2015.

His blog, Big City Sparkplug, will include not only submissions of these chapters, but a new column every Monday, and a “Weekend Reading” list every Friday that alerts readers to the latest in urban news and ideas. The theme of his writing is that for American cities to improve economically, they must enact reforms that favor deregulation, innovation, and growth. But the blog will also have snippets about what really makes these cities interesting–that being, the dynamic nature of their cultures.
